The Story Of
The Back Orchard Barn
Posted December 31, 2025
Back Orchard Barn - Freeland, Michigan
Pay Rate: $16/hour
We are looking for a motivated, dependable, and creative person to join our Back Orchard Barn team. This role is a mix of hands-on event management and social media. You will be part of the team creating and running events in real time, while also helping tell the story of the barn online through social media, marketing, and behind-the-scenes content.
The barn hosts everything from weddings to meetings to special events, and no two days ever look the same. This job is great for someone who loves events, enjoys being hands-on, has a big personality, and is comfortable jumping in wherever needed. We care a lot about relationships, teamwork, and going above and beyond. We are not just pushing events through the door. We are creating experiences.
This position is seasonal, and hours will naturally fluctuate based on the time of year and the number of events on the calendar. Some weeks may be around 20 hours, while busier weeks can reach 40 hours or more. Our busy season runs from May through November, when events are frequent and hours are higher. The off season is December through April, when hours are lighter and schedules are more flexible. This role is ideal for someone who understands the seasonal nature of events and is comfortable with a schedule that ebbs and flows.
This position is both in-person and remote. Social media, marketing, and some planning work can be done from home, but this role requires being in person often. We work best when we are together with the crew, especially during events. You also need to be okay with long event days, nights and weekends, and occasionally popping in for a quick 30-minute meeting when needed.
What You’ll Be Doing
-
Helping manage the day-to-day flow of events alongside the Venue Director
-
Working directly with couples, clients, and vendors to make sure events run smoothly
-
Leading and supporting event staff during setup, events, and teardown
-
Making sure the barn and event spaces are set up correctly, cleaned, and ready to go
-
Keeping an eye on supplies, inventory, and event equipment
-
Enforcing venue rules while keeping things friendly, welcoming, and guest-focused
-
Being a calm point person when questions or issues pop up
Social Media, Marketing, and Events
-
Posting and keeping up with our Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok
-
Creating fun, real, behind-the-scenes content of the barn and events
-
Answering messages and comments across social platforms
-
Helping promote weddings, special events, and seasonal happenings at the barn
-
Assisting with special events from planning to promotion to execution
-
Helping keep the website updated with current info, photos, and event details
-
Supporting marketing ideas, promotions, and creative content for the barn
What We’re Looking For
-
You are 18 or older
-
You have at least 2 years of event or social media experience
-
You are organized but flexible because events rarely go exactly as planned
-
You are comfortable leading a team and jumping in when needed
-
You enjoy working with people and creating great guest experiences
-
You are okay with long hours, nights, weekends, and busy event days
-
You have a creative side and are comfortable using social media
If you love events, enjoy creative work, and want to be part of a growing venue with a fun, hardworking team, we would love to hear from you.

In 1889, John Welzein Sr. and Sophie Paulitz Welzein immigrated from Germany and purchased 14.5 acres of land in Michigan. What began as a small fruit stand has grown into a beloved family destination, now spanning nearly 100 acres, including 10 acres of apple trees.

The “Leaman” name joined the story in 1925, when Harry Leaman married Leona Welzein, a third-generation member of the farm. Their son Jack and his wife Jacquelyn “Jacquie” Dudewitz expanded the business by building the main barn, adding cider, baked goods, and crops like raspberries, blackberries, and pumpkins. Of Jack and Jacquie’s four children, John and Jaye continued the legacy by introducing school tours, a corn maze, and other agritourism activities that brought even more families to the farm.
Jaye went on to have four children, including Sara and Jamie, part of the farm’s sixth generation, who now work alongside the family, each bringing their own passions and ideas to help the farm continue to grow.

Each generation has left its mark, from planting apple trees to creating new ways to bring people together on the farm. The Back Orchard Barn was the sixth generation’s dream: a place for weddings, gatherings, and celebrations rooted in love, family, and tradition.

Each generation has left its mark, from planting apple trees to creating new ways to bring people together on the farm. The Back Orchard Barn was the sixth generation’s dream: a place for weddings, gatherings, and celebrations rooted in love, family, and tradition.
Though the barn faced some hurdles in its early days, construction began in early 2023 and just six months later, the first wedding was held on June 10, 2023. Since then, the Back Orchard Barn has hosted countless joyful moments and welcomed so many into its story.

The design honors our farming roots while embracing modern touches. The barn’s timbers replicate an 1800s dairy barn, and repurposed materials like the tin and pergola beams were salvaged from that original structure.

What began as a dream has become something truly special, thanks to the love and support of family, friends, and this amazing community. We’re so glad you’re here and can’t wait to welcome you to the Back Orchard Barn.
